The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav’n of Hell, a Hell of Heav’n.
What matter where, if I be still the same,
And what I should be, all but less then he
Whom Thunder hath made greater? Here at least
We shall be free; th’ Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav’n.
-Lucifer, Paradise Lost

Astrological dignity is a contentious topic, useful in many ways, limiting in others. It falls flat when treated as a way of ascribing an inherent “goodness” as opposed to describing conditions in which a planet behaves most conventionally and predictably. It is my personal belief that dignity can often describe our willingness to conform or submit to hegemonic structures. Venus in Scorpio says, instead, to quote Lucifer (with whom Venus is equated through the epithet Morningstar) in Paradise Lost, that it is “better to reign in hell, then serve in heaven.” Lucifer’s rebellion against divine authority can be seen as an act of liberation, defying ignorance and oppressive structures.

I was inspired to create these rings as a devotion to my own natal Venus in Scorpio, who has guided my art since I first picked up a crayon, and also as a devotion to planets in “detriment” as a whole. When we make astrological talismans, it is our intention for the focus of our election to have the best possible dignity, however these “undignified” planetary placements have their own inherent value and beauty that should not be overlooked. While not talismans, I have chosen to channel the energy of this placement devotionally in the design of these rings, which are an ode to Venus in this shadowy and martial expression. I believe now more than ever we need the medicine of the shadows and the ability to move, live, and love in unconventional, covert, and subversive ways. Venus in Scorpio is Venus of the underworld and the demimonde. She reminds us that love is not merely about comfort or companionship. It is a crucible, a force that tests and transforms, that strips us of illusions and leaves us radiant in our vulnerability. It is a love that mirrors life itself: fleeting, beautiful, and filled with the potential for rebirth.

The design of these rings were based on my conception of Venus as Queen of Hell and feature a rosecut hessonite garnet shield to evoke her Martial kingdom in Scorpio. They were hand-sculpted in jeweler’s wax and cast in solid sterling silver.
